With an excess of a hundred year history, Charlwood Scout Group has naturally seen its share of changes over the years. Our name and district has changed several times from Reigate to Horley to Dorking where we now sit alongside other village groups. Nowadays 8th Dorking Charlwood) are a thriving group with Beaver, Cub and Scout sections successfully meeting weekly.

Formed in 1911, 1st Charlwood Scouts met weekly under the leadership of Mr Francis Gibson, their headquarters being in the Rectory wash house! In the 1920’s the group was famed for its very large Bugle Band, later becoming a Drum and Fife Band led by a well-loved village character Jarvis Ellis. Following WW11, the Scouts boasted an old Nissan hut as their home. The land for the present Scout Hut was purchased in 1959 and on the grand opening day, notable village resident and supporter, Lady Farrer planted a beautiful red rose bush; this still flowers every year.

We have always made the most of our great rural location making full use of the woods and public footpaths. Our members are active and fully embrace the outdoors side of scouting. Programmes are imaginative and exciting with a wide range of activities to keep the youngsters motivated.

The Scout Hut underwent major refurbishment in the 1990’s to make it fit for today’s young people to enjoy their meetings. Further refurbishment was carried out last year so Beavers, Cubs and Scouts can meet in a safe and child-friendly environment.

We are very fortunate to have a wide range of supporters and Scouting continues to be an essential part of Charlwood life. The group regularly play a role in village events and an annual honour is the invitation to attend Remembrance Sunday parade and proudly carry our standards aloft alongside the Royal British Legion.

We are an active and forward thinking group and readily welcome new members. For more information on joining Scouting in Charlwood, please contact Penny Shoubridge, the Group Scout Leader or telephone 01293 863221 or have a look at the groups own website
